Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)
ICSI – Intracytoplasmic sperm injection is when the sperm is injected immediately to an ovum.
The female patient is prescribed the fertility medications to stimulate the development of follicles. Once a sufficient number of follicles have formed the ovums are withdrawn. The same day the male sperm is retrieved in a natural way or using the TESA procedure (under local anaesthesia tissue/sperm is aspirated from the male’s testicles). Sperm is injected to the ovum. The next day the fertilisation result is checked. If successful, the embryos are transferred into the uterus from the 2nd to 5th day after fertilization.
The procedure is applied when the reason for infertility is bad quality sperm, when there is an insufficient number of sperm or its mobility is poor.
