Fertility testing for men and women

There are many risk factors and conditions that can hinder conception, making targeted examinations of couples essential. This includes both general and specialized tests. The main goal of the specialists at the Northway Fertility Centre is to identify the causes of infertility as accurately as possible, allowing for the development of an effective treatment plan to help families conceive. You can undergo all necessary laboratory, instrumental, and genetic tests at any of our fertility centres located in Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda, or Riga. Our clinic's specialists will draw up a plan for the necessary tests depending on your situation.

Where to start?

• We recommend that you start the investigation of the causes of infertility in your couple with a semen analysis (spermogram). You can take the test at one of our centres in Vilnius, Kaunas or Klaipėda.
• To book a semen analysis appointment, please call our desk office at +370 633 30 303.  
• Arrive at the testing location at the scheduled time, or submit a semen sample for testing within one hour after ejaculation.
• You will receive the results of the semen analysis with a comment from the embryologist by email:
  • If the test results show no abnormalities, we recommend that your partner/couple seek further investigation into the causes of infertility by an obstetrician/gynecologist specializing in the treatment of infertility.
  • If the test results show abnormalities, we recommend that the man see an endocrinologist and urologist or a urologist specializing in infertility treatment for a more detailed examination.

Laboratory fertility tests

Laboratory tests are conducted on blood, semen and other media. Tests are divided into two categories: specific and non-specific. The fertility specialist will prescribe tests after the initial consultation. There is no need to do these before the visit.

• Specific tests: PRL (Prolactin test), TTH test, AMH (Anti-Müllerian Hormone), E2 (Estradiol), LH (Luteinising Hormone), FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone), PCR tests for sexually transmitted diseases. Before assisted reproduction procedures, more tests (HIV, RPR, hepatitis tests) are carried out for safety reasons, and the patient's immunity to rubella is assessed.
• Non-specific tests include complete blood count (CBC), blood type, Rh factor, vitamin D test. In unclear cases, additional tests may be carried out to clarify certain endocrine conditions.

Sperm tests

The first-line and most important test to determine the cause of male infertility is a sperm test, also known as a semen analysis (or spermogram). The spermogram definitively assesses the quantity, number, shape and motility of the sperm.

Our laboratories also offer specific semen tests: oxidative damage assessment, semen HBA, and semen DNA fragmentation testing. Special preparation is required for sperm testing.

Instrumental examinations

Gynecological ultrasound is the main instrumental test used to determine the cause of infertility in women. A doctor often performs it during an initial consultation. A tubal patency test, hysterosalpingogram, diagnostic laparoscopy or hysteroscopy will also be performed to diagnose pathologies of the fallopian tubes and the small pelvic organs.

Genetic testing

Genetic testing and counselling are essential if one or both partners have a diagnosed or suspected hereditary condition or a history of two or more spontaneous miscarriages. In addition to general genetic testing of the couple, we also carry out specific genetic tests, such as the genetic test for endometrial receptivity.

Non-invasive genetic testing for embryos and implantation is also available at the Northway Fertility Centre in Riga before embryo transfer.
